  1. An element, symbol P, atomic number 15,
  2. relative atomic mass 30.975. It occurs in
  3. several forms, the commonest being white
  4. phosphorus (a waxy solid emitting a greenish
  5. glow in air, burning spontaneously to
  6. phosphorus pentoxide, and very poisonous) and
  7. red phosphorus (neither igniting
  8. spontaneously nor poisonous). It is used in
  9. fertilizers, in matches, in the prevention of
  10. scale and corrosion in pipes and boiler
  11. tubes, and in certain organic chemicals. It
  12. was first identified by the German alchemist
  13. Hennig Brand in 1669. Production of
  14. phosphorus and its compounds has greatly
  15. increased since World War II.
